Step Into the Holodeck
In Star Trek, the holodeck is the ultimate escape. You step into a room, state a prompt, and a fully formed, hyper-realistic universe appears out of thin air. For a brief moment, physics, resource constraints, and human limitations disappear.
Right now, tech culture is living inside a collective AI Holodeck.
When you first prompt a modern generative model, the experience feels genuinely magic. You ask a question, and within seconds, a vibe coded web app, a script for your science content videos, or a fully formed architectural diagram renders in front of you.
When you’re inside the simulation, it’s hard to remember it is a simulation. The hype tells us that raw human effort is obsolete, edge cases are solved, and output is now infinite.
But eventually, the program ends. The doors slide open, and you have to walk back into the physical world.

The 5 Stages of AI Grief
When we step out of the holodeck and collide with reality, we don’t just experience a shift in tools—we go through a distinct grieving process for the idealistic, effortless world we were promised.
1. Denial
“This bot is going to do 90% of my job. I’ll never have to write boilerplate code or draft a strategic roadmap manually again.”
We assume the initial 80% output represents 80% of the actual value. We ignore the missing context, the subtle hallucinations, and the underlying system dependencies.
2. Anger
“Why is this agent using all my tokens in 10 minutes? Why did my boss expect this to be done in five minutes just because I used a prompt?”
The frustration hits when we realize that evaluating, auditing, and fixing probabilistic output often requires more hyper-vigilance and mental bandwidth than building the system from scratch.
3. Bargaining
“If I just write a 500-word super-prompt, or try a different framework, or ‘just generate it again,’ the model will magically catch all the edge cases and save me.”
We attempt to negotiate with the system, treating a probabilistic dice roll like a deterministic script.
4. Depression
“I’m stuck doing endless code reviews for a fleet of AI bots, catching tiny bugs, and managing noise. Am I even an engineer anymore, or just an unpaid auditor?”
The exhaustion of constant vigilance sets in. The loss of deep flow state and manual craft leaves technical workers feeling burnt out and disconnected.
5. Acceptance (Returning to Reality)
“AI isn’t a holodeck, and it isn’t magic. It is a high-speed, probabilistic tool with very specific uses and hard biological limits on the human operating it.”
Engineering in the Real World
Acceptance is where real engineering begins.
When you leave the holodeck, you stop expecting AI to replace human judgment, strategic depth, or emotional labor. You stop feeling guilty for slowing down to audit generated work, and you start treating AI for what it actually is: a specialized cognitive ergonomic tool.
It can draft the raw scaffolding, but you own the architecture. It can speed up generation, but you set the boundaries to protect your nervous system from information overload.
Pro Tip: Treat AI like a high-speed, sleep-deprived intern. It can fetch coffee and write boilerplate, but if you let it architect the database unsupervised, you’ll spend your weekend cleaning up the spill.
